The Three Best Songs By Traffic

I was not a Traffic fan when they were at their peak in the late 1960s and early 1970s. I was really too young and not yet tuned into their sort of vibe. My education on Traffic began in the early 1980s and continues today because there’s always something new to hear.

You Can All Join In melds the silliness of deep British folk with the carefree vibe of the Grateful Dead. Glad touches on their jazz heritage and John Barleycorn is one of the most heart-wrenching songs I’ve ever heard. It used to be the last song I’d play at the bar where I spun classic rock back in the late 1980s.

They are the three best songs by Traffic.

Traffic – You Can All Join In
Traffic – Glad
Traffic – John Barleycorn

I like Traffic a lot, and these are good songs, but their best? Not for me. What about “Mr. Fantasy”, “Feelin’ Alright”, “Paper Sun”, “40,000 Headmen”, and my personal favorite though others might not agree, “Cryin’ to be Heard?” I love the guitar and overall vibe of “You Can All Join In”, but the other two are mid-level songs, I think. But it’s great you posted them and opened a discussion.

well if I was making this list , Paper Sun and Giving to You would be there..
they were simply the best Traffic songs ever.

Truth is that Traffic didn’t make a bad studio album between 1968 and 1971. Note that I said STUDIO album; there’s no way to embrace the ugliness of Last Exit or Welcome To The Canteen as anything but bad jabs at contractual obligations. At the end of the day, I could’ve broken all the rules and named the half-dozen songs from Low Spark as the best…and not have been far off…F45
