Terry Callier, Southern Culture on The Skids

callier

Terry Callier was a colleague of Curtis Mayfield who scored some regional hits back in the 60′s. When he gained custody of his daughter in 1983 he retired from music to become a computer programmer at the University of Chicago. But his five album repertoire from the 1970′s kept getting played in clubs, sampled by producers and sold (sometimes unlicensed) by record labels.

Reticent to step back into music, he continued to work at the U of C while recording this record, Time Peace, which was released by Verve in 1998. A beautiful record of heartfelt stories, it won the United Nations’ Time For Peace award for outstanding artistic achievement contributing to world peace. Up until that time, Callier’s secret life as a musician was unknown to his colleagues; the award, ironically, blew his cover and, according to stories, resulted in his dismissal.

Callier continues to perform, record and make guest appearances on records by the like of Beth Orton and Massive Attack.
