We listened to the ReplacementsAll Shook Down album yesterday morning on the commute to school. The kids didn’t really take note until we got to cut five, Sadly Beautiful. The boys recognized the song from the Glen Campbell record I’ve been playing to death for the past several months. It was cool they recognized it (and agreed ‘both versions are pretty good’).

I’m a long way from being an expert on the Replacements. I know they were from Minneapolis, that Paul Westerberg was their leader (for better or worse, agreed upon or not). I’ve read they were influenced by a mix of the Stones and the Clash, that they have been pretty influential on bands that have followed (like the Goo Goo Dolls). I know there are people who thing they were the best band of the 1980’s.

I have a promo copy of Pleased To Meet Me I inherited from a radio station somewhere along the line, though I haven’t listened to it more than a few times. All Shook Down has been in the family library for 15 years or better, one of my wife’s contributions back in the beginning, but I can’t say I’ve ever listened to it. I’ve had Westerberg’s 13 Songs for a long time and have some favorites from that one.

I guess All Shook Down was a critically acclaimed record, thought there’s question of how much of it is an actual Replacements record and how much of it is Westerberg solo.

As my friend Jeff at AM Then FM says, I’m late to the party on the ‘Mats. But, like my 10-year old, I get to discover new stuff every day…even when it’s old.
