Bell Sound Recording, New York

Not to be confused with Bell Sound in L.A., Bell Sound Recording in New York was operated on West 54th Street from the late 1950’s until 1976. Max Crook, who participated in the recording of Del Shannon’s Runaway tells his story on the Del Shannon website plus there was a story about the session recently in Mix Magazine.

Modest by today’s standards (with walls covered by standard issue white acoustical tile and floors covered with linoleum) owner Al Weintraub’s studio turned out hundreds of hits. Legend has it that Bell was the first in the country to go to 12 tracks.

Here’s the first of two posts with some samples:

Little Anthony And The Imperials - Shimmy, Shimmy, Ko-Ko Bop
Johnny And The Hurricanes - Red River Rock
Del Shannon - Runaway
Frankie Lymon And The Teenagers - Why Do Fools Fall In Love
Brian Hyland - Sealed With A Kiss
Brian Hyland - Ginny Comes Lately
Buddy Holly - Rave On
Dionne Warwick - Walk On By
The Exciters - Tell Him
Jay And The Americans - Cara, Mia

  1. Thanks for the cool oldies..

Do you remember a song called “Down In The Boondocks” ?
It came out in the early to mid sixties..
I remember that song as a kid..But,I can’t remember who sang it..
So having a hard time finding it..
I think it was maybe a 1 hit wonder type of thing..
I appreciate the help..Thanks..Cool site you have !

  2. Hello Michael:

I certainly do remember “Down In The Boondocks”…’twas a hit for Billy Joe Royal in 1965.
He had a few others crack into the Top 40 after that but “Boondocks” was his signature, as it were.
You’ve inspired me to do a little more research into him and, equally interesting (to me, anyway), the guy who wrote it.
Look for that one soon and thanks for dropping by.
