You're probably right...Leigh, no doubt, had to pedal hard to keep up with the peloton (to use a cycling expression). I guess I bought Brando's "chair-again-the-wall" overacting more than I bought Leigh's "purring-with-the-cigarette" melodrama. I'm ill-qualified to be a movie critic; maybe I am bass ackwards. I do appreciate another point of view, though. Thanks for commenting. Music [Not Movie :)] Junkie.

i think you're looking at the movie bass ackwards..

as ib says above, it's Brando who's showboating....the play is NOT about Stanley...

Brando's portrayal on Broadway was apparently even more overblown...it was a big problem at the time as it completely subverted the intent of the play..

if anything, i think Leighs performance is an attempt to hold her own in the face of an actor intent on chewing up the scenery...

The man speaks the truth; just look at The Grateful Dead. They only had one top 40 hit (after, what, 20 years?), their albums sold well enough, but they ALWAYS sold out EVERY concert they gave. I saw them do three shows at our local hockey arena stadium, and they sold out all three shows in a heartbeat -- and often to the same people who came to all three shows.

Interesting. I haven't heard the live performance aspect put with this line of thought before, but they are both things that have bothered me.

It really is a great time to be a musician.

Yes, Second Contribution is an extraordinary piece of work. I also swoon in front of "We," a track from his Faces album that was released as a single and was utterly ignored by the public. (Their loss, not Phillips'.)

Seek out his Second Contribution album, which features one of the longest song titles I've ever seen. Great tune too. Our man now lives in South Africa, where hewas quite big back in the day (a bit like Rodriguez).

Shawn Phillips was big in South Africa in the late 70's and 80's. Faces and Second Contribution got our attention. His thought-provoking lyrics combined with an amazing vocal range set him apart from the mainstream. No way he was drinking the recording industry Kool-Aid. Rodriguez is another musician who made it big in South Africa but not in the US. In the 70's, you couldn't walk into a bar without hearing something from Cold Fact. Rogriguez is not in the same class as Shawn Phillips but his music had an anti-establishment appeal that allowed one to feel like a rebel in a regulated society.

Doesn't surprise me (I did chuckle). When I lived in Mid-Missouri, two inches shut most everything down. When that happened, I'd stay home, too, but not because of the snow. I stayed in because none of the Missousians knew how to drive in snow and were most dangerous to drive amongst.

Well here in London, England they often close school for less than 1/2 inch of snow!

Couldn't resist commenting on this I've been a daily visitor since 6 November and like your blog but haven't been moved to comment yet. I think I followed a link from someone, probably Siblingshot but it might have been Art Decade and liked what I saw and hung around in the background until now
