Tom Petty’s Mojo
(Revised 8.17.10) Wherein Mr. Petty reconvenes his Heartbreakers for a stab at another genre. When they stay focused on co-oting the blues, the record works. When they get lost, the tempo drags and it’s just another Tom Petty album, nasal droning and all. A friend says this is their best album since Wildflowers; given what they did from ’76-’79, I’m not sure that’s saying much. If I were Robert Christgau, I’d give it a B+.

Hey, guy, I thought we’d lost you for good. It’s great to see you back! And I very much agree with you about “Mojo.” Stop by my place if you’re so moved.
